Trail Overview

This is a very nice scenic and slow-going trail through Turkey Canyon, Horse Canyon, and Cottonwood Canyon in the beautiful Lincoln National Forest. A majority of the trail is mild, but there are occasional obstacles like large rocks. With that said, it is recommended to have a lift and/or 4x4. If you do not have a lift and/or 4x4, then a solid set of all-terrain tires and an adventurous spirit will get you through this trail. Airing down your tires will help soften the ride and prevent unnecessary damage from the sharp rocks. Most of the trail allows for passing oncoming traffic, but there are several occasions where it narrows down to single-vehicle width. In some of the narrow portions of the trail, expect to get some pinstriping, especially if in a full-size truck. A hatchet, handsaw, or chainsaw could be very helpful in removing some of the grown brush in the narrow portions of the trail to avoid pinstriping. There is potential for downed trees and the previously mentioned tools will help make the trail passable again. If you need to make a stop and stretch your legs, there are several locations to stop and go for a small walk to check out the dry stream beds or even a cave. Or you can stop for the day and set up camp at one of the pull-offs along the trail and enjoy listening to the trees whispering to each other. Keep track of the weather for any precipitation or recent snow fall which could create several water crossings. However, most of the year is pretty dry with July and August being the wettest months. If visiting during the winter season or very early spring, be prepared for potential snowfall. Cell service is either very poor or nonexistent, so satellite or a long-range HAM radio is highly recommended for communication. Traveling in pairs is always recommended as well! Check your gear list, do your vehicle checks, and go enjoy this amazing loop in the Lincoln National Forest!

This was a great trail. Moderate in difficulty and my stock Gladiator Rubicon did not have any issues. I was in 4H most of the time, but there were definitely several climbs/descents that I shifted to 4L. I never needed lockers.

The trail was mostly a 2 to 3 rating with a few 4 rated climbs/decent. There are several other paths to take in adjacent to this trail that I ran. My stock Gladiator Rubicon had no problems with the correct line being chosen. It also had some great spots to camp.

Great trail! Definitely need a decently high clearance vehicle. I am running a 3in lift and 35's on my Tundra and did some scraping on the rock sliders. definitely slow going but very beautiful canyon route. there's also no gas anywhere nearby so make sure you fill up before you hit the trail.

Only a couple actual technical spots, mostly just slow moving through rock gardens. Definitely be prepared for some good pin-striping. Would definitely recommend having 4wd. Truck is on a 2.5” lift 35”s and cleared everything just fine. Couple spots where you need decent clearing. Have a few hours set aside to complete this trail if you are in a truck/jeep. Very cool ride

This canyon trail is absolutely stunning in the fall when the leaves are changing. The trail itself has a few technical portions where a spotter would be useful. Would definitely recommend 4x4 due to a few parts of the trail being steep and covered lose rock. The trail also narrows is some portions with large rocks and lots of brush. Be prepared to get some pin stripes. The entire trail took about half a day to drive with some stops for lunch. This area is one of the quietest parts that we went on. Definitely recommend if you have a 4x4 and are not concerned with some pinstriping. 2 wheel drive trucks would struggle at a few areas.
