Trail Overview

FR 117 Moon Canyon travels through dense forests of aspen and pine trees with intermittent drainages. The route has unavoidable deep ruts and mud holes throughout. On the lower section, a rocky, washed-out area will get the adrenaline pumping. In wet weather, the slick red clay makes this road nearly impassable.

Mostly dry and dusty, a few mud holes around but small enough to navigate around if you want. Fairly rough trail with deep ruts. The most challenging section for me was around .7 miles in with a mid grade uphill but with a significant off-camber and ruts. I had to adjust my plan a couple times as I wasn’t comfortable with that much off- camber (probably around 20 degrees). I opted to get into the ruts and ride them out. Used just about all the flex I had in the Jeep. I have 3” of lift with 35’s and it did great.

08/30/25 - Muddy in several spots, holes were approximately 12” deep in some places. One small rutted, off camber section about .3 miles into the trail from the south. Several large mud holes immediately prior. At roughly .7 miles in, there is a very off camber (my truck was tilted at 20 degrees) with large ruts. First attempted in 4 low, had to back up, engage locker, and try a different line. Smaller / shorter wheelbase vehicles might have an easier time. On the northern half of the trail, the road was mostly good with some smaller mud holes, however, there were several trees that had fallen and were partially in the road. I was able to navigate around there with only a couple inches in some places. Again, a smaller or more narrow vehicle would have an easier time.
