Trail Overview

Forest Service Road 134 is a rocky, relatively flat road that traverses down the Cabresto Canyon in Carson National Forest. This mostly gravel and dirt trail doesn't have any difficult obstacles and can be driven by any AWD vehicle. The 15-mile valley road is full of wildflowers, water-flowing creeks, and wildlife. There are wild chipmunks and birds including woodpeckers and cardinals. There are several offshoots along the trail that visitors use as unassigned primitive campgrounds;no permits are required. At the end of the valley, you will be welcomed by an open meadow and stunning views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range. This trail is also heavily trafficked by SxSs. There are no toilets available on the trail.

Easy road all the way to the final meadow. Aspens are turning so it made for a beautiful afternoon ride. Some washboard, and some potholes, but nothing too bad. I did air down and that smoothed the ride. I saw a handful of sxs, but no other vehicles, and the road is plenty wide, except for the last mile or so that loops around the meadow. Unfortunately no wildlife sightings, save for the herd of cows at the top.

I only drove this road from Questa to Cabresto Lake so I cannot speak for anything East of Cabresto Lake. There are some washboard sections but otherwise a fairly standard dirt road with limited potholes and so major obstacles. I saw a sedan driving it. Dry, a bit dusty as one would expect, no snow or mud. Pretty easy.

Snow gets heavier/deeper at Italian Canyon and decided to turn around as I was by myself and don’t have traction boards. Don’t think it’s impassible by any means but was a bit more than I was willing to risk. Still a nice drive up to that point with pull offs along the way and stopped and was able to make it all the way to cabresto lake on the way back.
