Trail Overview

Mountain Road is a New Hampshire Class VI road. Coming from the south, the route stays right, indicated by a Class VI sign, as Swamp Road goes left. Cow Pastures can be seen to the right as you begin your first climb onto Mountain Road. You will come back down to an intersection for Mountain View Spur. Follow the road straight, but stay left, look for a second Class VI sign. Note there is a private paved driveway on the left, further up passed the second sign. The trail is tight and is to the right of the driveway. The rest of the trail is straight on through. Mountain Road does end in a neighborhood, so be respectful of the people who live there. As of 9/14/25, there is active logging occurring in the area, so be mindful of equipment.

Dry overall when I went through from the south side. Only encountered a couple muddy/wet spots, nothing too deep. Main challenge was the rocky/boulder sections. Definitely more technical than the rating suggests in a few spots. I turned around about 1/4–1/3 of the way in while solo. Truck likely could’ve made it, but didn’t want to risk underbody damage or getting hung up alone. Stock Tacoma TRD Off-Road handled everything up to that point fine.

Trail was slightly muddy. Nothing hard about. Easily passable with a bone stock Wrangler Sport or Willys. I didn’t bother to air down. Wish I would have. It is a pretty bumpy trail in the middle. Some loose small rocks. There was one part that was covered with water that I figured was going to be muddy but was all rock.

I wanted to test my stock FX4 before adding my Dodinson lift and 32 AT’s . I read the trail reports and thought this would be a good trail to do so. I would say the early spring condition was a bit more of a challenge than previous reports indicated. Lot of puddles up to 14” deep and a few tricky mud ruts. The rock sections weren’t bad and with stock 9“ clearance had no problem avoiding them. My tires were quite poor but with locking rear differential and terrain control the FX4 motored along quite well.

Tested out a stock SR5 4Runner 2016 for the first time on this trail today, it was a great first trail! Nothing too challenging at all but just enough to get a little dirty as a beginner and test out a stock 4X4.

Difficulty ratings are subjective, obviously. I did this is a 2019 Chevy Express Camper Van weighing around 7,000lbs. The van is 2WD with an Eaton G80 Auto-locking diff. Beginning at the southern entrance, there were a few steep and rocky sections covered in wet leaves and I would not have been able to do this road without the rear locker. I had to air down (Goodyear Workhorse HT). Half of the road, until you get to the logging activity, is like that. It's pretty much smooth sailing from the logging operations to the northern end of the road. Fun road overall.

Definitely fun for people looking to crawl through a trail, very bumpy and rocky in some parts aswell as some technical wheeling but overall a very fun trail. Some ruts with water/mud and some tight spots. Leaf cover isn’t too bad on this trail just yet but it’s probably because is more popular. There is a lot of private land crossings so just stay on trail and you shouldn’t have any issues

Started from Swamp road. The first ⅓ was more challenging with some large embedded rocks making for a bumpy ride. My OBX with Sasquatch had plenty of clearance and you should be fine with a stock Bronco or Jeep but I would not advise driving your sedan through. Trail leveled out to flat dirt/gravel road for the final ⅔s.
