Trail Overview
Yankee Blade FS43184E is a narrow out-and-back trail that climbs steeply into the rugged hills of the historic Yankee Blade district. This route hasn't seen maintenance in quite some time, making it a true "explorer's" track. As you ascend, the trail is flanked by low-hanging Utah Juniper and Pinyon Pine, which can make for tight navigation. The drive is physically engaging, characterized by steep ledges, dramatic drop-offs, and deep ruts. A keen eye will spot the stone outlines of ruins--the skeletal remains of buildings that once housed the miners of the 1860s. The trail culminates at a turnaround spot situated on an old, overgrown switchback. From this high vantage point, the views of the Reese River Valley and the sweeping mountain ranges to the southwest are nothing short of spectacular. If you look further up the hill, you can see the switchback continue toward two more prominent tailings piles, though the drivable portion ends here. A few bars of LTE service can be found intermittently, depending on your line of sight to Austin, but it is not reliable. Download offline maps before starting your ascent. This is high, arid terrain. Carry at least one gallon of water per person per day, extra fuel, and a full-sized spare tire. The Yankee Blade area is littered with old workings. Do not approach or enter any shafts. "Stay Out, Stay Alive."

Difficulty
This trail features tight switchbacks and narrow sections with significant exposure (drop-offs). Drivers should be comfortable with heights and precise tire placement. High-clearance 4x4 vehicles are a must. Full-size rigs may find the low-hanging trees and narrow turns particularly challenging.
History
The Yankee Blade district was settled almost immediately after the 1862 silver discovery in Austin. For a brief few years, this canyon was a rival to Austin itself, boasting a bustling population and high-grade silver ore. The stone ruins you see along FS43184E are likely over 150 years old, built with local rock because timber was a precious, expensive commodity in the high desert. These hills once crawled with thousands of miners dreaming of striking it rich in claims like the "Confidence" and the "Yankee Blade."
