Trail Overview

South Spencer is a lightly traveled out-and-back trail that provides a rugged ascent from well-established valley-floor routes into the narrower, more intimate canyons of the Toiyabe Range. The journey begins with expansive mountain views, but the environment quickly "closes in" as you enter the canyon's narrow corridors. The trail is a visual treat, featuring unique geological rock formations that tower over the track and a dense canopy of high-desert scrub. The driving is physically engaging and technical. As you head deeper into the canyon, you will navigate significant rock piles that require careful line selection and several deep, off-camber wash crossings. The vegetation in these upper sections is thick and unmaintained; the trail becomes exceptionally narrow, and paint damage is a near-certainty as the brush scrapes the sides of your vehicle. Keep a sharp eye on the sky for various raptors, including Red-tailed Hawks, that use the canyon thermals to hunt, and watch the brush for Mule Deer and the occasional wild burro. There is no cell service once you enter the folds of South Spencer Canyon. Download offline maps before leaving the Austin or Highway 50 corridor. This is rugged, remote terrain. Carry at least one gallon of water per person per day, extra fuel, and a full-sized spare tire.

Difficulty

Rated a 3 due to the combination of large rock obstacles and steep, off-camber wash entries. This is a narrow, "pinstripe" trail. The brush is dense and unavoidable in the upper canyon sections.

History

South Spencer, like its famous namesake hot springs in the valley below, was part of the vital network of water sources and transit routes for 19th-century pioneers. While the valley floor saw the heavy freight wagons, canyons like this one were used by prospectors and "wood hawks" who supplied the town of Austin with the timber and charcoal needed for the silver mills.
