Trail Overview

This trail serves as the southern gateway to the Spencer Hot Springs area, especially convenient for travelers descending from the Toiyabe Range via Pete's Summit Pass. This route offers a quicker and significantly smoother alternative to the more heavily trafficked northern access roads. Because it sees far less use, the road surface remains well-graded and impressively free of the jarring washboarding found on main desert arteries. The drive across the valley floor is characterized by vast, wide-open horizons. As you cruise toward the springs, you are treated to spectacular panoramic views of the Big Smoky Valley and the looming mountain ranges to both the east and west. The area is a haven for wildlife. Even on this fast-moving road, you are likely to spot numerous wild burros watching from the sagebrush. This route also provides excellent access to a variety of secluded dispersed campsites and serves as a backdoor entrance to the historic Linka Mine complex. Ample dispersed camping opportunities are located along this route, offering a bit more solitude than the sites immediately adjacent to the hot springs. Cell signal is extremely spotty and unreliable throughout the Big Smoky Valley. Download offline maps before leaving the Austin or Highway 50 area.
