Trail Overview

Sequra Reservoir is a rewarding out-and-back trail that offers one of the most refreshing sights in the Nevada backcountry: living water. The route transitions from the scorched, dry valley floor into the lower foothill folds, leading to two lovely reservoirs. These ponds are fed by a natural spring flowing at a healthy rate, creating a vibrant oasis. The upper pond is particularly lush and teeming with life. You’ll find thick green algae and likely spot a pair of mallard ducks lazily swimming across the surface. This rare moisture attracts wildlife from miles around, making it an exceptional spot for observation. The drive up the foothills provides spectacular, wide-angle views of the sprawling desert basins below. For those looking to spend the night near the water, the area features several flat clearings suitable for dispersed camping. The trail is a classic narrow two-track that remains relatively easy until the very end, where a short, steep hill climb brings you to the water’s edge. High-desert water sources are incredibly delicate. If you camp here, please set up at least 200 feet from the water and ensure you pack out all waste to keep the oasis pristine for the wildlife and livestock that depend on it. Expect zero cell service once you leave the valley floor. The surrounding hills block all signals. Download offline maps before leaving the Austin area.

Difficulty

Rated a 2 for its generally smooth two-track surface. The final hill climb is the only section that requires a steady foot and high clearance, but it should not pose a problem for most capable 4x4s.
