Moon River Viewpoint

Moon River Viewpoint is an easy, scenic 4.7-mile out-and-back trail ideal for beginners, overlanders, and high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles seeking panoramic views of Wayne E. Kirch Wildlife Management Area's reservoirs and surrounding desert peaks. Starting near Hay Meadow Reservoir and running north along the Wayne E. Kirch Wilderness boundary fence, the route consists primarily of a mild sandy and gravel two-track road. Drivers can expect minimal elevation changes across this high-desert terrain, navigating between 5,130 and 5,277 feet. While the path is generally straightforward, offroaders should be prepared for some deeper ruts and minor wash crossings that may require four-wheel-drive or higher clearance depending on recent weather conditions. The trail leads to a picturesque overlook that serves as an excellent vantage point for watching the sunrise over the lakes or spotting local wildlife like wild burros and cattle. Dispersed camping options are available on adjacent BLM land, with several short offshoots providing level, flat ground suitable for a night under the stars. Cell service is surprisingly reliable here, with up to three bars of LTE coverage throughout much of the route. Vehicles such as stock SUVs, SxSs, and overland rigs will easily handle the terrain, which is best visited during spring and fall to avoid extreme summer heat.
