Trail Overview
The Matterhorn Trail is a short but highly engaging 1.4-mile offroad route in the Logandale Trail System, perfect for experienced drivers seeking a mix of technical obstacles and stunning desert scenery. This trail stands out for its unique sandstone formations, named after a nearby jagged peak that resembles Switzerland's famous Matterhorn. The trail runs alongside the Weiser Valley, often tackled from north to south, and climbs from an elevation of 1,713 feet up to 1,889 feet with approximately 273 feet of cumulative elevation gain. Four-wheel-drive vehicles with high clearance, such as built Jeeps, trucks, and capable SxSs, are highly recommended to negotiate the rugged terrain safely.
With a technical rating of 7, drivers will face several challenging obstacles, including rock ledges, slickrock climbs, and descents measuring between three to four feet. Near the end of the trail, an optional slickrock chute presents an even greater challenge with a high potential for body damage, allowing drivers to test their limits or choose a safer bypass. The primary surface consists of solid rock, sand, and loose dirt, making traction key, especially during hot summer months when temperatures in the Nevada desert can become extreme. Visiting during the cooler seasons of fall, winter, and spring ensures the best traction and a more comfortable experience while exploring this scenic desert landscape.
