Trail Overview

The trail starts off of Kyle Canyon Rd (Highway 157) and takes you into Grapevine Canyon in Mount Charleston. 4WD is recommended. The first part of the trail is pretty easy with some sandy areas that lead to Grapevine Springs. This is a beautiful canyon with a lot of greenery, as you continue past that the trail starts to get hard-packed with some off-camber and slightly rocky narrow canyons on your way to Grass Springs. You may see some wildlife, a small green meadow, and a partial stone cabin. There is no fee to enter and it is not busy. This was so much fun and beginner-friendly.

Difficulty

This trail has some sandy areas on the first portion, once you hit the middle part it is more hard-packed gravel with off-camber and some rocky small ledges that you will want high clearance and 4WD. You will also navigate through some narrow canyons.

Like previously stated, extremely washed out. Was able to go around the 3 foot drop on a dirt bike, but anything with 4 wheels is going to have trouble.

The Kyle canyon entrance is very deteriorated/washed out. In a 2 door wrangler Willys it scraped belly and took a few minutes to make it up. Past that is a very sketchy slot road that is approximately 3 feet deep, my tires were all about halfway on the tread on the ledge, and the edge of the slot was collapsing as I drove over it. If you fall in that slot it’s going to damage the vehicle. There were several rocky sections, high camber areas (30 degrees +) and ledges due to washouts that would make me rate the section between the powerline road and Kyle canyon more like a 6-7. I had to use the rear locker and swaybar disconnects to make it through. I’d recommend avoiding this with anything smaller than 33” tires and anything with a long wheelbase.

BEWARE! If you are coming in from the Kyle Canyon entrance, you MUST HAVE a lifted 4x4 with oversized tires. The entrance has EXTREMELY washed out. There are 3 foot vertical ledges, loose gravel, and a 3 foot deep rut that runs down the center of the uphill climb all the way to the top. A spotter is very necessary unless you have driven this part of the climb as it sits today. Stock vehicles will struggle to accomplish this part of the trail. The rest of the trail appears to be fine until you get 1 mile from the end. This part has also washed out completely. I was in full articulation front and rear and still barely managed to have enough traction for the hurdle the wash. The trail at this section is also EXTREMELY narrow and very off camber. Be advised you will rub with some bushes and trees. It also will be very difficult to traverse with a stock vehicle in its current state. The road that runs along the power lines is also completely washed out. Expect a bumpy ride, but stock 4x4 is fine.

Entry from Kyle Canyon badly eroded from storms, again. similar to after the 2023 hurricane. Ruts are several feet deep in places. The rest of the trail from the top of this entry climb to Grapevine seems fine.

South entrance off Kyle Canyon has been washed out severely. with moderate lift and 33s. We were unable to get up the entrance. Loose dirt and rocks from our attempt and others. Highly advise fo not attempt alone, or on less that locked 35s

Heads up if you’re coming in from the Kyle Canyon side—the entrance has taken a beating from recent water runoff. It’s heavily eroded and forces you to straddle or drive through deep washouts. Recommend larger tires, good clearance, and 4WD with low range. This section will test your line choice and breakover angles. Once you’re past the entrance, the rest of the trail runs as advertised—fun, scenic, and not too technical. No closures or obstacles on the main path. Tip: Enter and exit from Highway 95/11. It’s much more manageable right now and keeps things flowing. Stay safe, tread lightly, and pack out what you pack in.

We started the trail off Kyle canyon road. The beginning of the trail is a hill that has been pretty washed out by recent storms, we made it up in four low and lockers. Washed out sections along the trail. We made it about halfway thru than back tracked out.

Took about 2 hours to do entire trail. Did not see anyone else on trail on a Thursday afternoon. Definitely narrow in places, got a few more desert pinstripes. Most of the trail is pretty easy, like a 2 or 3, but honestly, some spots are pretty off camber and had me pretty puckered. Also, quite a few ruts that require decent approach and departure angles to not impact. I was ok in a lifted Land Cruiser on 33s. But I’d say this trail is more like a 4 or 5 difficulty. Like most people, saw A LOT of wild donkeys.

entered from Kyle canyon road. first part of road going up from Kyle canyon has had way too many 2 wheel drivers ripping it up and causing it to be very bumpy in a annoying way cause you know who caused it. after that most of the trail is good its very easy to take a wrong turn and not realize you are on a dead end spot you'll have to reverse all the way out of. I did find a few sections are difficult as you have very little clearance left and right on a stock jeep. but it made it through fairly easy considering its not my first time off roading. lots of donkeys when you get near the spring. if entering through Kyle canyon when you get to the springs you'll have to drive between a fenced off area. to continue through the trail but its very wide. would not recommend this trail for any pickups as I saw a driver who turned around and told me its not possible because of the tight spaces (he was in a f150 )

Lots of loose shale rock, for sure requires A/T tires at a minimum, a few spots where care is required to navigete obstacles, Southern half is far more challenging than the straight sections on the North side. 4 low on one or two sections, 4H on steeper sections, 2H for most of Northern half. Wild burros and horses gravitate to water tanks on the route.

Started before sunset in our 3GT. Aired down and dropped er into 4LO pretty early on the trail. Some articulation, one Boulder in particular in a tight creek wash. All in all was a fun trail. Definitely worth checking out.
