Trail Overview

Kodachrome Road is an easy trail and is suitable for any type of vehicle. Along the way, you will see many colorful geological formations. The colorful landscape inspired the trail's name. Along the way, you will pass by Frenchman Mountain, which makes up the eastern boundary of the Las Vegas Valley. Kodachrome Road is a through trail, but you can make it a loop by returning on the nearby Rainbow Gardens or Lava Butte trails.

Fun trail. Very well marked. Some loose sand in spots but nothing worrisome.

Great day for it. Dry, not hot. Trail was just fine for our ATV, no issues. This was a break in ride for the new quad and is perfect for something like that. Probably a perfect trail/road for a new rider to get the feel of their machine on too. As for road vehicles, we did see a Tahoe having some potential issues with two rocky spots. I personally wouldn’t attempt in an SUV unless lifted. My stock Ranger 4x4 MIGHT have cleared those rocks ok (perhaps not the nerf bars though) but I don’t think I’d take it down there having seen what we saw on the ATV. It is brand new though so still in the babying it mode.

The trail is an easy 2 except for the second rock area if coming from Lake Mead Blvd. That area is a bit challenging but an almost stock Subaru Outback Wilderness was able to do it without deflating tires. The last 2 miles are full of trash but it is easy to manage.

Beautiful Sunday late afternoon drive. South to North. No issues. Rocky section in photo and nearby Cairn.

Love the landscape as the desert, especially this trail, is so colorful and beautiful! But pity that there is trash dumped on some parts of the trail along the north end....and tons of trash dumped along the south end of the trail and along the South Hollywood Blvd. :( We got some aerial and GoPro footage of our drive along the trail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4rOxfieFH8

Pretty and scenic. Stock Jeeps or 4x4s will be fine. Parts are sandy washes. If you stay on the main trail, there are no difficult climbs.

It’s rough. Going from Lava Butte to this trail is not recommended. If you want to do this one, start up front and work your way towards lava butte. Extremely rough with jagged and sharp rocks. Crossing many huge rock beds that reach a few feet. I don’t think I’ll ever take this one again because it took a lot of patience and effort to make sure I cleared these rock formations without any damage. It’s rough

Enjoyed scenic mountain desert with red rocks and enough turns to keep it interesting - smooth ride, not too rough or rocky, and trail wide enough to avoid brush. Well maintained, but one section seems somewhat washed out with some boulders - would definitely need four wheel drive. We are in stock F150 Tremor. Also a steep incline to climb at the end. Overall, good trail for the Vegas area

Very fun twisty trail. Can run a decent speed and deal with tight hairpins and then straight aways. But must be cautious due to some sneaky smaller rock gardens that slow the pace. Awesome trail

This is actually my first time doing any trails, and although I was concerned at first, this trail is a great introduction to off-road in a full size vehicle. The staging area had a couple of cars and some horses, but once out on the trail there was no one else. I kept it in 2wd almost the entire time, except to get up a section of steep rock, which is also avoidable/optional. Towards the end there are some great sections that are similar to rally conditions where you can get up to 45mph and be in complete control. This was also the day after a thunderstorm and a day of heavy rain, but no issues from that at all. Will definitely be going back!

I started this trail at the north end of Lake Mead blvd and retuned north on the east leg of Lava Butte Loop. This is an easy trail with only a couple of areas that I had to really slow down over uneven terrain. I did not need to air down tires, nor use 4WD but there's a few rocky areas to pay attention to. You can pick up a little speed towards the south end of Kodachrome road. It's hard packed dirt/clay and smooth on the south end. The return trip north on Lava Butte had better visuals, more gravel and a few small steeper inclines. It took about 2 hours to complete the loop.
