Trail Overview

The starting point is right near Gridley Lake and you will head east up the trail toward the mountains. There is mining activity in the area, so Knott Creek Road will have a bit of heavy truck traffic to at least be aware of. This trail will start off pretty mild, but there are a few areas to watch out for mid-way up depending on the season, weather conditions, and your vehicle that could give you some trouble. You will find climbs with sharp loose rocks, climbs on top of sandy boulders, climbs with loose sand, and a few tight switchbacks. The grade combined with the obstacles is what creates the difficulty. Big adventure motorcycles and stock 4x4s are capable but will need a skilled driver. A dual Sport motorcycle and well-equipped 4x4's or SxSs would be the vehicle of choice. The ground is quite sandy and in some places, the sand on the rock obstacles can be very slippery. This trail is moderate for the most part but will test you with the loose jagged rock and sand mid-way up the trail to the reservoir. Once to the water, there are camping, fishing, and picnic areas to rest. This trail can be an out and back or you can connect it to the Knott Creek South Access for a loop.
