Trail Overview

From Reno, take Pyramid Highway north for about 17 miles and turn left onto Winnemucca Ranch Road. Follow Winnemucca Ranch Road to a large parking/staging area to your left (Moon Rocks Recreation Area). This parking area has plenty of room for even the largest of trailers. You will find the start of Jumbo Ranch Run by taking the Warm Springs Mountain Loop/Flat Tire trail and staying right just past the Ranch and Corral area. Near the start of this trail, you will find two ranch gates marked by the BLM. Please ensure the gates are closed. At the end of the maintained section of Winnemucca Ranch Road, known to some as Deer Valley Creek, water flows easily over parts of the road, but crossing is not a problem. This trail is easily passable for all off-road vehicle types. The route will take you up through mountain canyons, across wide open grasslands, around the Dogskin Mountain range, past Newcome Lake, over Red Rock Canyon, and back to the staging area. Wild horses and antelope can be found in large herds, adding to the beauty of the ride. Winnemucca Ranch Road was once a main route into California. The remnants of a stagecoach stop can still be seen at the Marshall Ranch.

The water has receded enough to make the water crossing doable on a bike. It was a beautiful day to be out, no one else was on the trail and very few people around moonrocks in general. Spring flowers are in bloom and are fragrant.

The water crossing at Dry Valley Creek is not safe for Motorcycles as the mud is too deep. We did see a jeep cross but it does have a wider tire contact patch than a motorcycle.
