Trail Overview

Hunter Lake Trail is a two-way trail. You can start at the end of Blue Truck Trail on Hunter Lake Rd or enter from Garson Road off of I-80. It will take you up to just over 8,500 passing through pine trees and past meadows. There are some quite narrow spots on the eastern end of the trail so be prepared for a few brush scratches. There are some sections of rock and washouts where depending on your vehicle's flex you may lift tires as well as a decently long but not deep water crossing with large rocks. This can be tricky as the rocks get slick and can make it difficult for vehicles with smaller tires to stay on their line. There are plenty of spots to stop and take a break and enjoy the views. This trail is maintained by volunteers from Hills Angles, so help out and keep it clean.

Difficulty

This is not a terribly difficult trail, a stock 4x4 can make it. Some spots may take careful line choice depending on ground clearance.

Started from Boomtown (north/west) side on Thanksgiving day. Trail became more snowy and icy towards the top. The old af tires on my truck weren't cutting it on the ice and I had to turn back when it got too slippery. Great views and scenery, and some nice camping spots. Hope to come back when it's drier.

Did this trail in my relatively stock 5-speed XJ, I made it to Hunter lake and back via the Caughlin Ranch entrance. Trail is tight and off camber in some areas but not too concerning. One notable rut required good line choice, and shortly after that I reached a rock garden with a stream running through it that had some 12" rocks. Once I made it past that, had to take 41392D as a bypass to the main trail that consists of another rock garden that I didn't have enough ride height for. Coming back down the mountain, it's very easy to take the wrong fork and end up on another spur off the main trail with one notable pair of rocks creating a shelf that's about 16-18" that I couldn't clear, and I had to turn around to the main trail to get out. After this obstacle it does link back up to the main road, I provided a photo of it as it is a cool obstacle for a lifted vehicle and I will definitely be back with my 4" lift kit

On a bike the rocky sections are quite jarring very very rocky sections. For my personal skill level I was exhausted after riding a 450 through there also rode the green sector leading up and was just as rocky . I rode in from the south and out in the north side when it’s not a moon field of rocks the views of town are super awesome and the Forrest provided some shade

Made it farther than anyone else to date…had to winch some to get through large snow drifts but even then we could only make it about 1/3 of the trail. The trail became impassable due to deep heavy snow.

Passable at lower altitudes, but once I got up to about 8200' the snow drifts were 2-3' deep and forced a turn around.

Lower end is dry but up in the trees coming from the Verdi side the snow on the road was impassable in my mostly stock truck with all terrain tires.

Mostly good but still some snow up top that makes it tough for full size vehicles.

Pleasant day on the trail, beautiful weather, amazing views. Not much wildlife, unfortunately, and lots of dust. Overall an excellent long trail!

I enjoyed EVERY MINUTE on this trail. Very rocky, pretty narrow in some parts, but sooo much fun. Met a big group of 20+ rigs. I am definitely planning to come back here at winter time.
