Trail Overview

This trail features a mostly dirt base and provides a moderately easy ride under dry conditions. However, after rainfall, the dirt quickly turns slick and muddy, which can make traction more difficult, particularly on inclines. Scattered along the trail are embedded boulders that stick up through the surface, requiring drivers to pay attention to their tire placement to avoid hang-ups or undercarriage contact. In addition to the rocks, the trail includes a series of smaller rolling hills that add a bit of elevation change and variety to the ride. While not overly technical, these features make the trail engaging enough to keep drivers alert. It's a good choice for those seeking a mild challenge with natural terrain variation.

Difficulty

This trail falls into the moderate category, with a mostly dirt surface that becomes slick and muddy after rainfall. One of the key challenges comes from embedded rocks throughout the trail, some reaching up to 18 inches tall, which require careful tire placement to avoid bottoming out or dragging your undercarriage. A series of small rolling hills adds light elevation changes but is generally manageable for most four-wheel-drive vehicles.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
