Trail Overview
Most of this trail offers an easy, laid-back ride, making it suitable for a wide range of drivers and vehicle setups. The majority of the terrain is straightforward, with a mostly dirt surface and minimal obstacles. However, there are a few sections that present more of a challenge. Expect tighter turns in wooded areas that may require careful navigation for longer or wider rigs. In addition, several short but steep hill climbs are scattered throughout the route, with embedded rocks that demand solid tire placement and throttle control. Depending on recent weather, you may also encounter muddy patches that can get slick and rutted. While overall approachable, this trail keeps things interesting with a mix of light technical features and changing terrain. It's a great trail for those looking to transition from easy routes to more intermediate challenges.
Difficulty
While much of the trail is simple and manageable for most 4WD vehicles, it narrows to a single-vehicle width for the majority of the way, meaning passing opportunities are rare and tight spots require focus. A few steep hill climbs with embedded rocks up to 18 inches tall add a bit of a challenge, especially after rain. Mud patches and tight turns through wooded areas also come into play, demanding careful line choice in a few sections.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
