Trail Overview
This trail is a technical rock garden designed for experienced drivers and well-equipped vehicles. It features a wide variety of line options, allowing you to tailor the difficulty to your rig's capability and your personal comfort level. The terrain is packed with rock formations and scattered boulders, some of which reach up to four feet in height. Depending on the line you choose, the risk of body damage is real, and in certain off-camber sections or steep transitions, rollovers are possible. Careful tire placement, proper spotting, and protective gear like rock sliders and skid plates are strongly recommended. Whether you're looking to test your suspension or crawl with precision, this trail delivers a serious challenge.
Difficulty
This is a high-difficulty rock garden that gives you choices, but none of them are easy. With multiple line options, you can pick how far you want to push your rig, but even the "easier" lines come with serious terrain. Boulders as tall as four feet demand solid clearance, proper tire placement, and a rig built for abuse. Body damage is a real possibility, and rollovers aren't out of the question if you get careless. This trail is meant for confident drivers and fully armored vehicles
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
