Trail Overview
This short but rugged trail delivers a concentrated dose of rock crawling for those looking to test their skills and vehicle capability. One entrance begins with a mostly dirt surface, featuring a few small whoops and a shallow mud puddle--nothing too technical, just enough to warm up your suspension. As you round the corner, the terrain shifts dramatically into a rocky section where boulders can reach up to three feet tall. This area functions like a natural rock garden, requiring careful tire placement, proper under body protection, and solid ground clearance. For those not looking to tackle the most extreme lines, bypasses are available, allowing drivers to skirt around the largest obstacles. It's a great trail for pushing your limits, or simply watching others do the same.
Difficulty
The entry is approachable--some dirt, small whoops, and a mud puddle--but things ramp up fast once you hit the rock garden. Boulders up to three feet tall demand solid ground clearance, good spotting, and confident driving. That said, optional bypasses let you skip the hardest obstacles if you're not feeling it. This trail is perfect for drivers who want to dip their toes into technical rock crawling without committing to a full-on challenge.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
