Trail Overview
This trail offers a light to moderate off-road experience and is a good option for drivers looking to navigate some rocky terrain without anything too extreme. The surface includes scattered boulders and uneven ground, but most of the route can be handled by well-equipped stock rigs with a bit of clearance. One notable feature is a large boulder where you'll either have to drive one side of your vehicle up and over it or squeeze by it if your vehicle is not overly wide, but it requires some attention. An optional rock garden adds a bit of technical fun, but overall, the trail is approachable and allows for flexibility with optional lines that let you choose your level of challenge.
Difficulty
This trail falls into the moderate category, offering a manageable challenge for most off-roaders. While it features some uneven terrain and a few larger rocks, nothing here is overly technical or extreme. A key obstacle involves navigating around or over a single large boulder by climbing one side of your rig over it. It's more about choosing the right line than relying on hardcore gear. Suitable for vehicles with decent clearance and drivers comfortable with light rock work, this trail strikes a nice balance between easy cruising and a mild technical experience.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
