Trail Overview
This trail begins off Crane Lake Road and follows a well-maintained gravel surface that supports both recreational and industrial use. Drivers should be aware of frequent truck traffic related to an active logging operation near the start of the route, as well as local residents and tourist vehicles. A signboard and a statue depicting a historic figure with a canoe mark the entrance, and there is a basic toilet facility nearby. The trail winds gently through forested terrain, offering a series of mild ascents and descents. Along the way, it crosses a river and provides access to two hiking trails and an ATV trail that branch off from the main route. The trail continues to the Nelson Resort, a well-known and often busy destination with rental cabins and boat access. As the trail approaches the resort, vehicle traffic should proceed slowly and with caution due to the presence of pedestrians and children near the roadway.
Difficulty
This forest trail is well-maintained and used by residents and adventurers. The route is wide and clear of debris, with established tread and minimal overgrowth, making it ideal for a smooth and scenic drive.
History
The historic statue is known as the “Big Voyageur Statue”, a 15-foot-tall statue erected in 1959, located at the intersection of Crane Lake Road and Nelson Road. It’s a tribute to French paddlers (voyageurs) who explored the region.
