Trail Overview
The Mesabi Mountain ORV Trail is a standout destination in northern Minnesota for experienced off-roaders seeking a technical challenge. Originally developed in 2011 by the Northern Minnesota Jeepers Club, this rugged out-and-back trail features nearly continuous rock crawling across the Laurentian Divide. Expect steep climbs, exposed rock shelves, and tight lines that demand skillful driving and precise spotting. Multiple spurs and alternate loops offer added difficulty and variety. This is a designated Jeep Badge of Honor trail, giving Jeep owners a chance to earn a badge by logging their run through the official app. Along the way, scenic viewpoints provide ideal spots to stop for lunch or regroup with your crew. Located within the Iron Range OHV Recreation Area and just minutes from lodging and restaurants in Eveleth, the trail delivers a premier off-road experience without needing to travel far from town. There is a designated parking lot for staging when you arrive and when getting ready to leave. A valid Minnesota ORV registration is required to ride here, regardless of residency, and can be purchased online or at local vendors.

Difficulty
This is a high-difficulty trail built for experienced drivers and capable vehicles. The terrain includes consistent rock obstacles, ledges, and tight tree-lined sections that demand strong driver focus and technical precision. While not an all-out buggy trail, it's well beyond what most stock rigs can handle. A minimum of 35-inch tires, front and rear lockers, and a winch are strongly recommended. Optional lines and spur loops can increase the challenge. Once you're in, expect little room to turn around--this trail rewards commitment and skill. Perfect for those looking to push their build and driving ability without leaving the Midwest.
History
The Mesabi Mountain ORV Trail was officially opened in 2011 thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Northern Minnesota Jeepers Club in collaboration with the Minnesota DNR. Built on reclaimed mining land along the historic Laurentian Divide, the trail was designed to bring true rock crawling opportunities to the Upper Midwest--something previously hard to find in the region. The area was once a hub for iron ore extraction, and remnants of that mining legacy still shape the rugged terrain. Today, the trail not only honors Minnesota's mining heritage but also serves as a testament to the off-road community's commitment to sustainable trail building and motorized recreation access.
