Trail Overview
Markham Road is reached from the paved Vermilion Trail #4 and begins by passing a handful of rural homesteads before continuing into forested terrain. The road is well-maintained gravel and offers a relatively smooth drive through the woods. Along the route, travelers will come across the historic Wirtanen Pioneer Farm, which features preserved buildings that visitors are welcome to explore. While the site includes restroom facilities, it does not offer any other services. Further along, the trail passes a large quarry before connecting with Colvin Forest Road. Markham Road eventually ends at its junction with Long Lake Road. While the route provides access to scenic and historic points of interest, there are no formal or informal campsites along this trail. Travelers should come prepared, as there are no provisions for trash disposal, potable water, or overnight accommodations. Cell service is unreliable in this area and may be entirely unavailable in some sections.
History
Wirtanen Pioneer Farm, homesteaded in 1904 by Finnish immigrant Eli Wirtanen, is now a restored living museum preserving Finnish-American heritage through its original log buildings and traditional craftsmanship.
