Trail Overview
This trail presents a moderately challenging route with a mix of terrain features that require driver attention and vehicle readiness. Throughout the trail, you'll encounter several mud holes, some deceptively deep, and additional mud puddles that form after recent rainfall, making traction unpredictable in spots. Parts of the trail feel nearly forgotten, with thick grass and overgrowth overtaking the path, making it difficult to follow established lines. You'll also face a few steeper hill climbs with embedded rocks reaching up to a foot tall, demanding thoughtful line selection and decent ground clearance. While not overly technical, this trail will test your awareness, especially in wet conditions.
Difficulty
This trail combines moderate mud conditions, overgrown lines, and short rocky climbs. After rainfall, expect slick mud puddles and soft terrain that can affect traction. The steeper inclines and one-foot embedded rocks require some driver skill and clearance. Not overly technical, but awareness and caution are needed throughout.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
