Trail Overview

Trail 83 is accessed from the paved Gunflint Road and begins as a wide, well-maintained gravel route that serves several lodges and tourist facilities. The early portion of the trail is smooth and suitable for most vehicles, passing through a developed area that includes public water access and lodging. Just beyond this point, the trail reaches a hill marked with a sign advising drivers to engage low gear or use four-wheel drive due to the steep grade. After the climb, the trail narrows and continues into more forested terrain before eventually entering private property (property owners are serious about even the slightest infringement on private property in this area). The route remains passable but is no longer maintained to the same standard beyond the hill. Drivers should be cautious and watch for local traffic throughout. While the trail provides access to recreational areas and lodging, it does not offer dispersed campsites and lacks amenities such as potable water and trash disposal. Cell phone coverage may be limited along portions of the route.
