Trail Overview
West Bear Creek Trail is a seasonal trail within the Traverse City Forest Management Unit. Located just southwest of the town of Copemish, this trail is easily accessible. Starting from the east side, you'll begin on a grassy/sandy two-track off Leffew Road. As you navigate down the trail, you'll be encompassed by a row of towering pine trees. The trail narrows randomly throughout with a fair amount of overgrowth. This track has a fair amount of sand. Like most Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. Come prepared. Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle with limited places to pass. You'll eventually run right along a sandy wooden ravine along Bear Creek. The creek isn't accessed very easily, but can be seen from the trail. The end of the trail loops back down to Leffew Road but to the west of where this route began. This is not a difficult trail at all, but it contains a lot of scenic views and gives access to other great recreation. Regardless of the length or conditions, this is a wonderful trail!
