Trail Overview
East Bear Creek Trail is a seasonal out-and-back trail within the Traverse City Forest Management Unit. Located just southwest of the town of Copemish, this trail is easily accessible. Starting, you'll begin on a grassy/sandy two-track in a clearing of the forest. As you navigate down the trail, you'll enter a thick section of trees that makes you feel like you just traveled to a completely different track. Here the trail narrows with a fair amount of overgrowth. As you weave along the trail, you may come across some washouts and/or mud holes. These typically aren't bad, but something to be noted. This is a trail that should be taken slowly to ensure you can take in its beauty. Like most Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. Come prepared. Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle with limited places to pass. The end of the trail finishes at a loop overlooking Bear Creek. This is a great spot to get out and stretch your legs, go down to the water's edge to see if you can spot any fish, and enjoy this incredible forest. There is a spur trail off the end of the loop. However, this leads to private property. Please respect the local landowners and do not trespass. This is not a difficult trail at all, but it contains a lot of beauty and gives access to other great trails nearby. Regardless of the length or conditions, this is a fantastic trail!
