Trail Overview

Trail FIT - FR 13044 is the southernmost ATV and SxS trail located in the Forest Island Trail system. This trail navigates from its intersection with Forest Road 14571 to its northern intersection with Forest Road 13041 and Forest Road 34613. This trail, if traveled from the southern trailhead north, starts out as a wide gravel forest road. After roughly a mile, it follows a side road that enters into the forest. At this point, the trail becomes much narrower. Two ATV's would fit on this trail; however, any SxS over 50 inches will need to slow down and/or stop to allow for passage of oncoming vehicles. Sightlines on this trail are poor in most locations due to the forest and underbrush that block views at most corners. It is very easy to ride the trail faster than the sight lines safely allow for. The terrain on this trail is a mix of hard-packed dirt in combination with dense loose sand. Most of the trail has small- to medium-sized rocks protruding through the surface. This, combined with many other imperfections in the trail surface, can create a moderately rough ride. There are several low spots on this trail that will collect water during and after rainfall, leading to some shallow mud holes. Elevation changes on this trail are fast but small; however, all of the tight corners, as well as the trail surface, create a trail that can be ridden several times before it gets old. Cell service on this trail is generally acceptable, but it can become spotty in other areas of this trail system. Downloaded maps are not needed but should be considered if unfamiliar with the area, as it can be easy to get lost or take a wrong turn in areas without good reception.

Difficulty

This trail can be ridden by riders of all skill levels. The terrain is very forgiving across the length of the trail, and the trail allows for most obstacles to be avoided if needed. Additionally, the trail base provides a good amount of traction even on the sand. The trail is narrow and will require anything over 50" wide to slow down and pull over to allow for safe passage. It is very easy to outdrive this trail and the speed at which it can safely be ridden. Corners flow nicely together and could allow for a good amount of speed to be carried. However, sightlines are very poor and do not leave much room for reaction time.
