Trail Overview

This route is a baseline for exploration in the Escanaba Forest Management Unit. It is primarily sand/dirt logging roads without any serious obstacles. Some areas can be slick and muddy after rainfall or during the snowmelt season. The trail can be completed by 2WD vehicles and is plenty wide for full-size trucks or vans. There are numerous off-shoots of varying difficulty and several spots to pull off and camp. The route terminates where only 50-inch ATVs can continue. 4x4s can re-route onto County RD 366 to continue the adventure.

Just a heads up, do not drive your 4-wheel drive vehicles down the northern section between Devils Creel and County Road 366. It is not open to 4x4's. It is designated for side by sides and smaller according to the DNR posted signage.

8/31/24. Trail started easy. I went from south to the north. Mostly dirt with some rocks to look out for and one or two muddy spots. Nice and wide for the most part. Easy train for my first time off-road until the north most bit where you take a hard right. Trail became VERY narrow. Had to have my wife spot me over a bridge and had only a few inches on each side. After that it became very twisty sandy and banked corners. Would recommend recovery equipment. I only had a shovel and traction boards. Would have felt better with a winch. Happy I didn't get stuck. Keep an eye out for the exit onto 366. It's a small gap in a treelike on your left right before another narrow bridge. Hard to spot, easy to miss. For my first trail this was a challenge and slightly nerve racking hoping I didn't get stuck. Only saw 3 groups of ATV's. No other vehicles. Truck did great but the narrows and the banked sandy turns certainly surprised me and my wife who were expecting an easy flat beginner trail.

Fairly easy trail. Almost had a head on collision with a pickup truck speeding around a blind corner. The northern end becomes very narrow. Almost too narrow for our jeep. But didn’t see a turnoff before it became narrow. Not sure what we would have done if we had another head on encounter.

Mostly dry trail. Spots where there are puddles and some mud. Might have to bring a chainsaw with after a storm as some trees are hanging low over the trail. Overall 10/10

BRING A SAW AND A FRIEND. Countless fallen trees blocking the trail throughout. Huge mud pit I didn’t feel comfortable trying alone about halfway through. Bridge pictured was damaged by a falling tree and was not passable on 35’s fully locked without sawing the tree in half and moving it. If you are afraid of scratching your vehicle I wouldn’t take this trail. The northernmost portion of the green trail must have changed and now is only passable with something stock jeep size. Made it all the way to the end following full size 4x4 trails just to have to turn around and find another way out at the very end. I will say I did have a good time on this trail but the original description was not what I ended up dealing with.

Great trail for all, we went when just after a light rain fall and had no issues. Mix of sand and mud, with some gravel spots. We made it up to highway 366 where we encountered a narrow bridge and a fallen tree.
