Trail Overview

Route FIT West is one of several 65 in. and under ORV routes located within the Escanaba Forest Management Unit. This trail begins at its intersection with Route FIR, Forest Road 31616, 14573, and navigates to its intersection with Route FIR 9995330. This trail is a converted 50 in. and under ORV route, so it is very tight with some moderate technical sections. To get the most technical ride, the trail is recommended to be ridden from its southern start point north. The trail begins as a narrow two-track navigating through moderately dense pine forest; there are many blind corners, and there is only a small amount of elevation change for the first mile of trail. The trail then enters a Pine/ Ceder grove where sight lines improve thanks marginally to a reduction in undergrowth within the forest. Elevation changes in this section become more frequent but are still limited. There are several low spots which will typically collect water and/or become mud holes. The last mile of the trail is where it's the most technical, with several very narrow sections, as well as bridges that just fit a 64in SxS. There are many off-camber corners, as well as short, steep hill climbs. Many of these hill climbs have mild drop-offs created by rainfall. The drop-offs expose small rocks as well as roots from the surrounding trees. Many sections of this trail will require vehicles to pull over and/or reverse to allow vehicles to pass. In addition, this trail also navigates onto several forest roads for a short period of time. Cell service in this area is very limited, and traveling with downloaded maps is recommended.

Difficulty

This trail is given a rating of 4 due to the technical sections located throughout the last mile of the trail. There are several short but steep hill climbs, with deep washes and exposed tree roots. Some climbs are off-camber and navigate around corners. Bridges on this trail are only wide enough for one SxS and will require vehicles to wait or reverse to clearings. Oncoming traffic will also need to reverse or find a clearing to allow vehicles to pass along many parts of this trail. The trail's sandy base provides good traction in most conditions, and there are several areas that are typically mud holes/ water spots.
