Trail Overview
Route FIR - Forest Road 13042 is a moderately maintained forest road. This trail runs from its intersection with County Road 551 to its intersection with Forest Road 13042 and Forest Road 34615. This trail is a part of the FIR route located in the Escanaba Forest Management Unit. This part of the FIR route is open to both ATV and SxS traffic, as well as 4x4 traffic. The difficulty of this trail remains the same when traveled from either direction. If the trail is traveled from South to North, it begins as a wide trail with a very sandy base, but very quickly narrows to just over one vehicle wide. The surrounding scenery is dominated by forest undergrowth, in combination with sparse pine trees. As the trail progresses, it moves into several areas of the forest that have been recently harvested, leaving behind only small saplings. As the trail reaches its end, the last mile moves back into forest dominated by pine trees. The trail surface changes to a silty sand with small to medium-sized rocks thrown throughout. ATV and SxS traffic on this trail has a small detour that navigates through a narrow section of woods at roughly the 3-mile mark when traveling north. This is to avoid a busy logging intersection. The entire trail is just over one vehicle wide. There is enough room around the trail that vehicles can pull over and safely pass, but this will need to be done at slow speeds. Cell service in this area is spotty. Traveling with downloaded maps is recommended if unfamiliar with the area.
Difficulty
The trail can be easily navigated by all levels of experience. The sandy base will challenge 4x4s or small crossovers with less power and less aggressive tires. Sight lines across the trail are generally good, but can be obstructed at times due to the undergrowth located along the trail's edge. As the forest regrows, sight lines will also diminish.
