Trail Overview

North Kolka Creek Road is a wide dirt, gravel, and sand forest road that offers an easy drive through the Grayling Forest Management Unit in Northern Michigan. Suitable for full-size 4x4s, SUVs, and other high-clearance vehicles, the route winds through a changing landscape of mature pine stands, hardwood forest, and pockets of younger regrowth, creating a diverse woodland setting with frequent opportunities to observe local wildlife. Its double-lane width provides ample room for two-way traffic, making it a comfortable choice for both casual explorers and those using it to access the surrounding trail network. The road can be driven in either direction, with one end connecting to County Road 612. The driving surface is primarily hard-packed dirt and gravel, with intermittent stretches of loose sand that may require additional attention, especially during dry weather. While the route itself presents few technical challenges, its value lies in the numerous intersections with neighboring forest roads and two-tracks, making it an excellent corridor for building longer off-road adventures throughout the Grayling area. Expect a peaceful ride beneath a varied forest canopy with changing scenery as the road passes through different stages of timber growth. Help preserve this public land by remaining on designated routes and practicing Tread Lightly principles throughout your trip.
