Trail Overview

FS 9978 is a fantastic trail within the Manistee National Forest. Located just south of the town of Yuma near highway M-37, this trail is easily accessible. Starting from the western end, you'll start out in a dense portion of the forest with a couple of rutted-out mud holes. About halfway into this trail, you'll come across a spur trail called FS 7546/7547. If you're looking for something different, with a beautiful row of towering pine trees, check this out. It's tight most of the way, but worth it. As you continue east down FS 9978, you'll climb in elevation all the way to the end. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. Come Prepared! Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle with limited places to pass. This is not a difficult trail at all, but it contains a lot of fun and beauty, and gives access to other great trails nearby. The east end of the trail finishes at the intersection of FS 9090/5228 & FS 7538/7534. Continue on for some more off-road fun! Regardless of the conditions of this trail, it's a wonderful track to explore with a lot of fun to be had! As always, again, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY and be respectful of our public lands so future generations can have access to these trails!
