Trail Overview
FS 9657 is an out-and-back, really rough trail within the Manistee National Forest. Located off North 168th Avenue, this trail is easily accessible. Most of the trail surface consists of dirt and leaves. Starting, you'll begin right in the most rutted-out section of the whole trail. This will surely rattle you good. Shortly after, you'll encounter a couple of washouts/mud holes. The remainder of the trail lightens up from the beginning, but is still pretty rough. As you continue traversing, you'll be surrounded by a section of dense forest with a canopy of trees all around. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause downed trees, washouts, & mud holes. Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle with limited places to pass. The end of this trail finishes with a small turnaround spot in the forest near a swamp. This trail is not at all difficult, but still gives access to other great recreation and contains plenty of scenic views.
