Trail Overview

FS 5288 is an exciting out-and-back trail within the Manistee National Forest. Located off South 162nd Avenue, this trail is easily accessible. Most of the trail is a combination of dirt and sand. Starting out, you'll twist and turn in an overgrown section of the forest. This section includes a lot of low-hanging trees to watch out for. As you progress down the trail, it becomes more of a dirt surface. This quickly leads you to several mud holes to navigate. There are various ways through these spots, so please use caution. Like most Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause downed trees, washouts, & mud holes. Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle with limited places to pass. This route climbs in elevation all the way til the end. The end of the trail is the most unique part. You'll twist around trees, navigate up and over some small bumpy hills, and finish with a descent down a steep hill with a turnaround loop. This hill can have a very loose surface and give traction issues. Please come prepared. If you're unsure of making the descent to the bottom, turn around and head back out the trail. As always, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY and be respectful of our public lands so future generations can have access to these trails!
