FS 5228

FS 5228 is a unique bidirectional trail within the Manistee National Forest. Located east of the town of Yuma and south of the town of Mesick, this trail is easily accessible. Most of the trail is a combination of dirt and sand. Starting out from the south end, like the other nearby trails, you'll begin in a dense portion of the forest with a fair amount of overgrowth along the trail. As you continue, the trail twists and turns and eventually hits a straight section. Shortly after, the trail begins to descend in elevation all the way to the end. Along the way, you may encounter trees overhanging this route. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause downed trees, washouts, & mud holes. Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle with limited places to pass. As always, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY and be respectful of our public lands so future generations can have access to these trails! Just before the end of this route, you'll cross over Smail Creek. There is only one place allowed to cross this creek to get to the other side. PLEASE ONLY USE THE DESIGNATED CROSSING AND STICK TO THE ROUTE. There's signage posted indicating where to stay out. This trail finishes at W 24 Road, where you can begin your next adventure!
