Trail Overview
Wilderness Retreat Road is a scenic 2.5-mile gravel connector trail in the Shawnee National Forest, perfect for beginners and seasoned drivers looking to stay off the pavement between more challenging routes. This easy-going dirt and gravel route features a mild 193-foot elevation gain as it winds through beautiful wooded terrain, bridging the gap between the Silica Hill and Opossum Trot sections of the forest. The trail is passable for most high-clearance vehicles, four-wheel-drive rigs, and SxSs, offering a relaxing drive through the Illinois backcountry. Along the way, travelers will cross three low-water bridges, including one over Lingle Creek near the northern entrance, which adds a touch of classic offroad adventure to the journey.
Connecting Wilderness Retreat Road to South Silica Hill Road and South County Line Road, this route snakes through several small, shallow creek crossings and rolls over a couple of gentle hills. While generally a well-maintained corridor, heavy rains can quickly elevate the water levels at the low-water crossings, making them the most challenging obstacle on the route. Offroaders should plan ahead by packing a chainsaw or limb-trimming tools to clear any downed timber that frequently blocks the pathway after storms.
