Trail Overview
South Silica Hill Road is a scenic 1-mile gravel route located within the Shawnee National Forest, offering a short but engaging drive for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs. Branching south off the Silica Hill trail system near SFR 645, the trail begins with a mild-grade hill climbing toward a maximum elevation of nearly 610 feet. Along this upper section, overlanders will find a dedicated campsite cut-out that provides an excellent spot to set up camp in a quiet forest setting. From there, the road descends into a lush valley, dropping to a minimum elevation of around 446 feet before connecting to Wilderness Retreat Road.
Navigating this technical rating 3 route requires some caution, as the terrain features mild rutting along the hill and two moderate creek crossings over sections of the Lingle Creek system. These creek crossings can swell and become significantly more challenging after recent rainfall, so checking local weather conditions is highly recommended. Fallen trees are also a common occurrence in this dense forest area, making it wise to carry a chainsaw or trimming tool to clear any natural debris blocking the roadway. With an overall elevation gain of around 140 feet, this trail provides a quick, adventurous connector for offroaders exploring the southern Illinois backcountry.
