Trail Overview

Rock Top SFR 233 is an exciting, scenic ridge-line trail within the Shawnee National Forest, perfect for four-wheel-drive enthusiasts seeking natural rock features and sweeping panoramic views. Spanning approximately one mile across Silica Hill, this route climbs to a maximum elevation of 816 feet, beginning with a challenging three-foot muddy wall climb at the base road. The main trail offers a moderate off-roading experience rated as a 4 out of 10, characterized by off-camber dirt turns, gravel inclines, and deep ruts. Drivers should expect tight widths and slick terrain that becomes significantly more challenging during wet weather conditions. For those seeking a greater challenge, an auxiliary northern loop increases the difficulty to a 6 out of 10 and leads to the highest point of the ridge. Due to the dense forest canopy, fallen trees are common along the route, making a chainsaw or trimming tool a highly recommended addition to any gear recovery kit. The trail intersects with Silica Hill Road (SFR 645), where exposed natural rock pops out of the hillside, providing an excellent spot to pause and appreciate the scenic Illinois landscape. Whether navigating the rutted mud inclines or tackling the tighter bypasses, this trail delivers a classic, rugged Shawnee National Forest experience.

This is narrow with steep grades, sometimes gravel and sometimes dirt. It's rutted pretty bad, but there wasn't any deep mud.

Had to carefully snake around a downed tree that had been cut/moved. Easy enough for a small/midsized, but I’m not sure that I would take a full sized truck through there
