Trail Overview
The John Wayne Loop trail is a fun and easy trail for ATVs. The north end departs from the Pee Wee ATV trail, and it goes south through the Kaniksu National Forest towards Forest Service Road 1334. From the north end, it drops down to a couple of small bridges over muddy creeks; one of the bridges is partially damaged, but appears still rideable. It meanders along the hillside full of lush ferns and brambles, which are sometimes overgrown and sticking out into the trail. There are a couple drier and more exposed spots that overlook the rural valley below, above the Priest River. After passing the intersection with the John Wayne A Spur, it starts switch-backing downhill, with several gradual and easy switchbacks that shouldn’t be a challenge for most riders, but add some minor technical element and variety. As you descend down to the forest road, there are some steeper sections with a bit more embedded rock and roots, and small loose rocks. However, it still remains easy and approachable for less experienced riders. There is a small shoulder on the forest road at the bottom of the trail that could be used for staging for one vehicle.
Difficulty
This is overall an easy trail as it has very little technical elements, other than a few mild switchbacks and a few steeper spots. Expect mild embedded rock, roots, and loose rocks, but no major obstacles.
