Trail Overview
Pee Wee is a moderately easy ATV trail in the Kaniksu National Forest near Priest River, Idaho. The south end starts at the Pee Wee Trailhead, which is a large dispersed camping and staging area. It winds through the forest for 4.2 miles up and over small hills, with several steeper climbing sections. The majority of the trail is wide, easy two-track, on smooth, flowy dirt, as this area does not have many rocks. However, there are a few steeper spots with more embedded rock layers and looser dirt that adds some technical interest. Expect small roots and a few sections with loose rock. Overall, it is very family-friendly and approachable for newer riders, though. The trail is very easy to navigate, with well-placed signs at intersections. It is well maintained, with bridges over the stream crossings, and any downfall has been cut by late springtime. There are a few sections where the bushes become more overgrown and extend into the trail, but they do not pose much of a hazard. Some sections will feel a bit narrower, and there are only a couple sections where the trail is more exposed, as it rides on the edge of a hillside overlooking the rural valley below. Midway through, it rides on a ridgeline with scenic views. It’s overall a very scenic and fun trail, riding through tall western red cedars and hemlocks, with lush ferns and brambles. The trail ends on the north end at an intersection with the dirt bike-only trail Steep Creek.
Difficulty
This trail is overall easy, as the trail surface is mostly just smooth dirt, with little technical elements or big obstacles. However, riders can still expect narrower and shelfy sections, and a few steep climbs, as well as overgrown vegetation. This is an ideal trail for newer or younger riders.
