Trail Overview
Buck Island Boat Ramp Road is a 0.8-mile point-to-point dirt trail rated 3 out of 10 located within the Buck Island Tract of Townsend Wildlife Management Area in Long County, Georgia. Access to the Wildlife Management Area requires a valid Georgia hunting license, fishing license, or Georgia Lands Pass. ATVs are not allowed. This scenic forest road provides access to the Buck Island Boat Ramp, a primitive camping area, and the Altamaha River.
The trail begins at the signed Buck Island Tract entrance and winds through a mixture of pine forest, mature hardwoods, palmettos, and dense vegetation. The surface consists primarily of loose sand with occasional ruts, uneven terrain, and low areas that can hold water after rain. While generally easy during dry conditions, maintaining momentum through deeper sand is recommended.
The trail ends at the Buck Island Boat Ramp, where visitors will find a public boat launch, primitive camping area, and direct access to the Altamaha River. The area is a popular destination for camping, fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, wildlife viewing, and photography along one of Georgia’s most iconic blackwater rivers.
Difficulty
Buck Island Boat Ramp Road is suitable for most stock four-wheel-drive vehicles during dry conditions. Loose sand, occasional ruts, and uneven terrain provide a moderate challenge while remaining manageable for most experienced drivers.
Following heavy rainfall, sections of the trail can become extremely muddy with standing water and deeper ruts, significantly increasing the difficulty. Four-wheel drive is recommended whenever the trail is wet.
History
Buck Island Boat Ramp Road serves as one of the primary public access routes to the Altamaha River within the Buck Island Tract of Townsend Wildlife Management Area. Today, it continues to provide access for anglers, campers, hunters, paddlers, and outdoor enthusiasts visiting one of southeast Georgia’s premier river systems.
