Trail Overview
Gopher Ridge Road is one of the more scenic routes through Tiger Bay Wildlife Management Area. It begins with a short stretch of old brick road before turning into a sandy, sometimes soft trail that winds through pine flatwoods, swamps, and dense forest. This road isn’t heavily maintained, so conditions can vary depending on recent weather. It’s best suited for high-clearance vehicles, but it’s also popular with hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. The trail offers a quiet, peaceful ride with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife like deer, wading birds, and even the occasional black bear. You won’t find crowds out here, just a sense of calm and connection to Florida’s wild side. Cell service can be spotty, so come prepared and follow posted signs and regulations. Gopher Ridge Road is a great choice for those looking to explore a lesser-traveled part of Tiger Bay and enjoy the beauty of natural Florida.
History
Tiger Bay Wildlife Management Area in Volusia County is named after the large wetland system at its core. Once used for logging and grazing, the area was later protected to preserve its natural habitats and recharge the aquifer. In 1998, severe wildfires reshaped the landscape, leading to major restoration efforts. Today, it’s managed for both conservation and recreation, offering opportunities for hiking, hunting, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing.
