Trail Overview
Bear Island Road in Tiger Bay Wildlife Management Area is a quiet, sandy route that travels through a mix of pine flatwoods, cypress swamps, and open wetlands. It’s less traveled than some of the main roads, offering a more secluded ride for those looking to escape into nature. The road passes near Bear Island, a low-lying area that often attracts wildlife, including deer, wading birds, and the occasional black bear. After rain, sections of the trail can become soft or muddy, so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. With its peaceful setting and variety of habitats, Bear Island Road is a great choice for exploring Tiger Bay’s wilder, more remote landscapes.
History
Tiger Bay Wildlife Management Area in Volusia County is named after the large wetland system at its core. Once used for logging and grazing, the area was later protected to preserve its natural habitats and recharge the aquifer. In 1998, severe wildfires reshaped the landscape, leading to major restoration efforts. Today, it’s managed for both conservation and recreation, offering opportunities for hiking, hunting, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing.
