Trail Overview

If you're heading to Taylor Park Reservoir from Aspen, this is the shortest route with beautiful views at Taylor Pass. Several other trails connect with this trail. Unlicensed vehicles can ride in reverse from the Taylor Park side but must stop at the pass. Beautiful campsites are available at Taylor Lake and Taylor River Road.

Difficulty

Difficult. Long section of bowling ball-size rocks is slow-going. Reverse direction is more challenging. Creek crossing has an obstacle that changes in difficulty. Fallen trees may block trail in early spring.

History

In the 1880s, Ashcroft was a major supply center for mining in the Aspen area. The road over Taylor Pass provided a way for stagecoaches and freight to come in from Buena Vista and Taylor Park. This road was quickly abandoned, however, as Aspen became the more important mining center and a new road was built over Independence Pass. Ashcroft's fate was sealed when railroads began serving Aspen in the late 1880s.

Trail totally passable until the shelf section at about 11,600 feet. Large snowbank, turn around before you get onto the shelf section.

A couple of buddies and I took an overlanding camping trip to Colorado. Each of us drove a wide range of vehicles, ram rebel, gladiator, Tacoma and a bronco. Taylor pass was on our list of trails, along with pearl pass. Taylor pass actually starts from Taylor park off FS 761 marked only with a 4x4 trail sign. A trail rating was not attached to Taylor pass. In my opinion it should be carry a rating of 5. Taylor pass did have a few technical obstacles to negotiate, but manageable. Overall a great trail, with some good views.

A bone-stock ZR2 Bison made it through pretty easily. I think a 7 rating is a bit high for this trail—closer to a 5 or 6 in my opinion. There aren’t any major obstacles, just some larger rocks to creep over. It’s a gorgeous trail and one of my favorites. I actually found Pearl Pass to be more difficult than this one. Along the way, I was lucky enough to spot two bull moose, which made the drive even more memorable

Not extremely difficult. Front and rear lockers helped. Couple water crossings but the best part is when your actually going up the stream. Bottom out once or twice. I did disconnect my sway bars for this trail. It would have been way too tippy if I didn’t. All stock WT Bronco.

Came up the Taylor Park side. Drove an FJ on 33s had no issues. Very straight forward trail, very few technical areas. Only area of note is a rock garden in the creek with respectable boulders.

Went up from the Taylor side from Dorchester. On the last switchback before the top right above Taylor Lake there's about 4' deep snow for maybe 30 yards. You can walk to the top but unless you're willing to plow in a fullsize, this is as far as you will get. Will probably have melted in a week or so.

Came up from west side / Aspen / Castle Creek Rd. Final shelf road section west of the pass is blocked with snow. Possibly a motorcycle could ride the outside edge but it's a long slide if you go off. Couple of bits earlier with snow too. Otherwise just rocky as usual. Other than the top, it was easy in my Bronco with 35’s (really 34-the industry lies) but looks the same as when I did it last year in my stock 4Runner — as long as you pay attention to the several large rocks that could take out an oil pan or rear differential.

Came from Taylor side. Ran a Rubicon and SbS. Some snow and ice, but still passable at least to the pass.

We came up from the Aspen side down to the lake and back. We did the trip in a silverado zr2 on 34s with front and rear lockers and full skid plates. You will get pinstripes if you are in a full sized truck or SUV. Shelf road up and down the express creek road was tight but doable with the help from 360 camera's. Beautiful views of the lake well worth the effort.

Excellent fall colors and magnificent views. Trail conditions were great. Only saw like 4 other Jeeps on trail. Lots of fun.
