Trail Overview

Switzerland Trail is a long and rough offroad route that offers a mix of rocky sections, washouts, and potholes throughout its length. The back half of the trail transitions into a shelf road, with banked curves and offset potholes requiring careful navigation at slower speeds. This trail is best suited for high-clearance vehicles, as it challenges drivers with uneven terrain while winding through dense forest and open alpine meadows, offering varied scenery along the way.

Difficulty

This trail has no major obstacles, but the shelf road will give novice drivers pause. The road is rocky and rough throughout, with ruts, off-camber sections caused by partial washouts, erosion, and exposed rock. Caution and patience are urged.

History

The Switzerland Trail follows portions of the historic Switzerland Trail of America, a narrow-gauge railroad constructed in the late 19th century to service the mining communities in the region, including towns like Ward and Jamestown. Today, remnants of the old rail bed and related structures can still be seen along the route, and the trail serves as a recreational corridor for offroad enthusiasts, hikers, and mountain bikers exploring the high-country forests of Boulder and Gilpin counties.

If you want to go head on with a SXS or an ATV, I highly recommend this trail. And if you want to throw trail etiquette out of the window and do as you please this is the right place for you. Those idiots will come flying around blind corners and you better hope their brakes are better than yours because they could care less if you’re in the way. They will jump off of the ridge just because. Trail sucks, there’s a reason is has a low rating. You can join everyone on a SXS and meet your creator really fast.

Trail is very rocky, I would suggest that the rating was higher than the trail rating. I’d recommend a high clearance vehicle. At least 8 inches of clearance. There are some quite large rocks sticking out in many places, most can be driven around, but there are also a lot of wash outs that require some clearance to navigate. Lots of ATV’s and Side by Sides on the trail, many of them driving fast, and I am torn to believe the reason the trail is broken down as much as it is. Views were also sub par compared to other trails we’ve been on in the area. We won’t be taking the trail again, simply just due to the amount of traffic. We actually cut out short after starting the trail from Nederland, we took Four Mile Canyon down to Boulder. I had my share of almost being hit by flying atvs and side by sides in the trail.

A bit of ice on the trail, as well as melted ice, converted into puddles.

Fairly easy trail, with optional obstacles that can be avoided. Most of the trail covered in thin layer of snow/ice. No crowds for the first half. Saw a bunch of Side by sides close to Gold Hill.

Just got into off-roading with my new wrangler. Second time off-roading and had so much fun on this trail! Probably shouldn’t have done it by myself though 😬. Pretty rocky course. Very drivable though. Went to 4L occasionally just to be safe but 4H with good clearance should be fine. A LOT of rocks on the road so be prepared for a bumpy ride. Amazing views! I’m

Beautiful drive late October. Nothing particularly challenging about this trail but there are some side areas to add challenge if that’s what you’re looking for. As others have said lots of embedded sharp pointy rock, so watch tire placement and be prepared with appropriate tires and spare.

Some small mud puddles, but nothing extreme. Good mix of shale rocks, dirt, embedded rock, with some challenging spots on big adv bike. I saw a few 4 runners that didn’t look much more than stock and they were doing fine.

Trail is fairly easy then the difficulty ramps up quite a bit at the last northern most section. I travelled from the south up to the north. There are a few places to exit mid trail if you're in a pinch. Overall, I went alone at night and wasn't really in any situation where I wished I had a partner or would need a winch. I was in 2wd the whole time up to the last 1/4 mile where 4Lo was 100% necessary. It was a steep climb with baby head rocks everywhere. There is plenty of room to turn around if you're not confident about the climb. Fire roads are about a mile or 2 back from that point.

Extreme newbie to off-road trials and the difficulty scaling on this app. Trail was much rockier than expected considering it’s rated a 2 😭 Nonetheless, I took this trail on in a ‘95 pathfinder with no modifications (in fact, the suspension is probably sagging from age LOL) Still managed not to scrape the undercarriage, also didn’t air down (against better judgement) but didn’t blow a tire. Beautiful views!!!

Just wet enough to not be super dusty. Trail is holding up well, some spots getting more deteriorated, but overall this is a nice easy to run trail.

Took a Stock 4Runner Sr5 (with slightly upgraded, old tires) and a Bronco Black diamond on 35s. trail was dry, super dusty. Lots of dirt bikers but a great trail to break in a new 4x4! Close to the cool, old town of Gold Hill. mild rocks, some reaching upwards of 6-8 inches in some spots. Other than that, pretty easy. couple spots to turn around and pass as well.

Do you like rocks and stones? At least 70% of this trail is stones of all shapes and sizes from crushed gravel to rubble piles to some pretty large stones. The dirt sections are pretty washboarded with large moguls. The whole trail could use some maintenance and grading with at least a half dozen areas washing out on the edge of the cliff. This trail would be a level 1.5 at best if it were in good shape. Definitely able to be done in a Subaru as long as it has good all-terrain tires to deal with the crazy number of stones. I never needed to put it in four-wheel drive to make it through anything. I can see how this trail would be a nightmare on a weekend. I would avoid this trail if I were a mountain biker or motorbiker because it was unpleasant in a truck. I can't imagine a bike. There was also a shocking amount of trash littered over the entire trail from start to finish. I don't think I would do this trail again in its current state. It would probably be a good recommendation for a complete newbie.
