Trail Overview

Go from Sunset, CO to Highway 72 on this fun route. If you want to make a loop, use the first portion of the Switzerland Trail. This will also offer a bit more challenge. The upper portion of the trail goes through a small residential area. It is open all year. Check weather first.

Difficulty

Difficult. One section is washed out with deep ruts, exposed tree roots and large, loose rocks. Very narrow shelf road for most of its length, with very few places to pass an oncoming vehicle. Please keep in mind that this is a county road and could be graded at any time. In past years, the road has been left in its natural state.

Came to the trail from the middle of Switzerland trail. It is more inclined, preferably high clearance vehicle. Our jeep is 35" tires not having too much struggle, for people with 33" tires might be struggling a little bit. Definitely narrow road, trucks is not advised. If you are starting from the beginning of Switzerland trail, you will be fine on 33" tires because it is going down instead. The hard part of the trail is more in the middle section.

There is a danger sign posted at the start of the trail. Believe that sign as there are numerous hazards to manuever over as the trail is too narrow to go around. Best driven with someone else for backup. Mostly large rocks but a good challenge.

Ram this trail about 3 years ago. Could not get through bcs guy in front would not clear stump. On 7/29 I ran it with a friend who’s trail this was number 5. He did great. Trail is a true 7. The rut out with the stump has gotten hire to cliff side therefore making more room to go up the run and stay away. The steep assent was crumbly and fun. Great 2 mile trail to add to an easy one!

Got most of the way up but came to an obstacle that was begging to scratch my rims more so I turned back but a very doable trail for a vehicle on 30 inch plus tires.

I took the trail downhill and the snow and ice made it very challenging. I was able to take it slow and didn’t fall. Lots of big and loose rocks. I’d love to try uphill on a dry day next time. I’m glad I don’t try that direction today.

Only was able to get halfway up the trail until it started going up hill and the bigger rocks were covered in a sheet of ice almost making it impossible to get over but also a very nice trail

Ran west to east (downhill). Dry, narrow in places but not too many challenging obstacles. Might be more challenging east to west. Id suspect itd be very tough if wet/mud/snow.

Not too difficult for this mostly stock RZR pro w/30” tires. One P.U truck passed us heading east (downhill direction of loop). Was dry conditions today. challenging mainly due to being so narrow and eroded. Not many large rocks to crawl over though.

Snowpack is still apparent on this road, and becomes very narrow toward the top when coming from Sunset. Snow and mud made it hard to gain traction, and had to back down due to lack of traction despite deflation. Was advised by driver in SXS that it becomes narrow at the top, and may be difficult for Jeeps to get past. Would recommend this for SXS only at this time.

Hard pack snow and lots of Ice. Some gravel/rocky areas. 18 degree uphill grade with a pitch of 16-20. Self recovery gear required. Had to winch 2x in order to bypass the steepest parts. Overall very fun challenging trail.
