Trail Overview

Spring Creek Road is an easy, scenic 2.3-mile point-to-point dirt track that offers a quick getaway through stands of beautiful aspen trees in the San Juan National Forest. Perfect for beginners, high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, and SxSs, this route serves as a scenic connector between Forest Road 382 and Forest Road 327 north of Mancos, Colorado. The trail sits at an elevation of approximately 9,000 to 9,170 feet, featuring minimal elevation changes with just under 120 feet of climbing. While mostly straightforward, the unpaved surface can become extremely slick and muddy during wet conditions, requiring extra caution and potentially four-wheel-drive engagement. The route passes near several local water features, including Roy Reservoir and Mud Reservoir, and shares the corridor with non-motorized recreationists on nearby hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails like the Aspen Loop. Drivers should expect a road width varying from one to two vehicles, with occasional minor obstacles under 12 inches such as small ledges, rocks, and shallow water crossings. Because it is unmaintained after heavy rain or winter snow, high-clearance vehicles are highly recommended to easily navigate the occasional ruts and damp spots. Seasonally, the trail is best enjoyed from late spring through fall when the aspens are lush or turning vibrant gold.
