Millwood Road

Millwood Road (Forest Road 559) is an easy, scenic 11.3-mile dirt route in the San Juan National Forest near Mancos, Colorado. Starting near Summit Reservoir at 7,600 feet, the road climbs to 9,000 feet at the junction with Forest Road 561. The drive winds through stands of aspens and ponderosa pines, offering sweeping mountain views. In dry conditions, the trail is suitable for most stock high-clearance 4WD and AWD vehicles. When wet, the dirt surface becomes slick and muddy with deep ruts, large potholes, and standing water. Because parts of the route border private property, staying on the trail is critical. Dispersed camping is extremely limited along the corridor, and seasonal winter closures apply when snow is present.
