Chicken Creek Road (Forest Service Road 385) is an 8.4-mile point-to-point trail near Mancos, Colorado, ideal for beginner offroaders, scenic drivers, and high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles seeking an easy but rewarding mountain drive. Rising from a minimum elevation of 7,768 feet near Jackson Gulch Reservoir to a peak of 8,964 feet, the trail winds through the beautiful aspen and pine forests of the San Juan National Forest. The route features a primary surface of dirt and loose rock with a technical rating of 2, making it highly accessible for stock sport utility vehicles, SxSs, and dirt bikes under dry conditions. While mostly straightforward, drivers should expect occasional small ledges, shallow water crossings, and obstacles under 12 inches along the unmaintained track.
The trail can become extremely slick and muddy when wet, particularly after heavy rains or snowmelt, which can significantly increase the difficulty and require low-range four-wheel-drive.
